TRC Holds Closing Ceremony for EU Project

    The Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture Concludes a Pioneering Project on Combating Torture and Promoting Accountability in Palestine

    On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture held the closing ceremony for the project titled " Strengthening and Enhancing Rehabilitation, Prevention of Torture, and Accountability in Palestine." The event took place at the Palestinian Red Crescent Society headquarters, in partnership with the Center for Defense of Liberties and Civil Rights (Hurryyat), and with generous support from the European Union.

    The ceremony witnessed a broad official and institutional presence. Dr. Mahmud Sehwail, Chairman of the Center’s Board of Directors, delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of the project in strengthening the resilience of victims and achieving justice. Dr. Khader Rasras, the Center’s General Director, also spoke about the project’s role in building national capacities in the field of combating torture.

    The event featured remarks from Mr. Jamil Saadeh, representative of the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs; Mr. Thomas Kirchner, Head of Governance Section –  European Union; Mr. Helmi Al-Araj, Executive Director of the Hurryyat Center; and Masa Khalifeh, Program Director at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture. Their contributions enriched the discussion and affirmed the importance of partnership and integrated efforts.

    The ceremony included a detailed presentation of the project’s accomplishments over the past two years. These included the provision of psychosocial and legal support to victims of torture, the implementation of training workshops aimed at strengthening the capacities of personnel in the security and legal sectors, in addition to awareness and advocacy campaigns, documentation of violations, and calls for legal reforms aligned with international anti-torture standards.

    An open discussion followed, allowing participants to exchange views and future recommendations in a constructive and engaging atmosphere focused on human rights and accountability. The successful event was moderated by Dr. Mohammad Shaheen, a member of the Center’s Board of Directors.

    The Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture extends its sincere appreciation to all who responded to the invitation and participated in this important event. The Center reaffirms its commitment to continuing its efforts in partnership with all stakeholders to uphold human dignity and combat all forms of abuse.
